Geography of Japan What the geography is like • Lots of mountains and little flat land • Japanese live on islands How it influences Japanese culture • People live where the land is flat along the coast. • separated from other cultures and developed their own unique culture.However, Japan was influenced by nearby China and Korea.
Japanese life • Japanese lived in clans(extended families) in small farming villages. • clan chiefs ruled their village & clan. • Chiefs were believed to have gained their power through kami,nature spirits of Shinto.
The First Emperors – The Yamato Clan • The Yamato clan was very strong • They conquered many clans around them and controlled most of Honsu (the big island). • Believed they were descended from the goddess of the sun Kami • Because of these things the leaders of the Yamato clan began to call themselves emperor.
Important People to Know • Prince Shotoku • Brought Confucian ideas to Japanese society • Encouraged the growth of Buddhism in Japan • Lady Murasaki Shikibu • One of the greatest writers in Japanese history. • She wrote the Tale of Genji which may be the worlds first full length novel.
