You want to study in the UK because… • It offers something you can’t get at home • You want the experience of living abroad • You’ve heard the teaching is great • It will show you a different way of thinking • You want your freedom • There’s a particular place you want to study • All of these are good reasons… • But you must know how to do it successfully!
The British education system #1 • Oldest academic universities in the world • Oxford – 1167 • Cambridge – 1209 • Contrast – Peking University – 1898 • Great achievements: • Newton - Optics, gravity, Laws of Motion – 1666 • James Watt, steam engines, 1776 • Babbage - First computer, 1831 • Faraday – First electric generator and motor, 1832 • Alexander Bell – Telephone, 1876 • Industrial revolution, 1850-1910 • Crick & Watson - DNA, 1953 • Plus thousands of other examples – the results of a creative, free-thinking attitude
The British education system #2 • Comparison
The British education system #3 • It is said that by 18, Taiwanese students are at least a year behind those in the UK • Is this a problem? • NO. • Why not? • The universities know this, and give you a chance to catch up • You are old enough to beat this challenge • All new students come into a course knowing different things anyway. Everyone has to work hard to learn the stuff they need to know. Self-study is the key.
Teaching Methods in the UK • The lecturer is a guide, like a navigator on a journey • YOU must be the driver! • The lecturers will match your performance • If YOU DON’T work, THEY WON’T bother to help you • If you DO work, they will help you all they can • No pressure will be put on you – you work because YOU want to
Aims – what can you achieve? • To develop as an independent thinker • Memorising (just knowing things) is useless • Memorising + no understanding = FAIL • Understanding + no memorising = SUCCESS • Because ‘knowing’ will happen anyway, without trying, so we don’t worry about it! “Never memorize something that you can look up.” ― Albert Einstein
How to be a successful student in the UK (!) #1 • LOVE YOUR SUBJECT • It must be beautiful to you. • It will seem easy if you like it • It will be a painful experience if you don’t, and you are likely to fail. • How can you have deep or original ideas if you don’t spend your time thinking about them? • Your lecturers love their subjects, and they will be offended if you don’t – why are you there? • If you DO love your subject, your teachers will enjoy teaching you very much – the best education in the world!
How to be a successful student in the UK (!) #2 • Deep thinking • Don’t just learn WHAT is true, think about WHY it’s true • Find the meaning, and understand WITHOUT being told – this is the KEY skill • Then discuss with your tutor – this makes them vey happy! • Keep thinking until you see how it really works – never give up and leave something as a mystery • Interact with your lecturers and tutors • Informal conversation can be as useful as a lecture, and keeps you ‘in touch’
Challenges #1 • Foreign: • Environment, culture, attitudes, etc. These are NOT important! Your subject is all that matters • Mix outside your culture • Open your mind • Relax – think – understand • Forget about memorising – it will happen like magic
Challenges #2 • English language • Use English from the start – don’t try to write in your language and then translate at the end • Every statement must be EXACTLY what you mean – there must be no doubt • Logical argument • Don’t say anything unless you say WHY it’s true (so you must KNOW why it’s true!) • Why are you saying it? Explain why it’s relevant • Be complete • Only use the English that you know how to use perfectly • never gamble that something makes sense – it won’t!
Challenges #3 • You may be a year behind • Don’t worry – they know this. You are old enough to make it up yourself. • Your lecturers are not working for you • They are working towards being great at their subject, and they expect you to do the same • Your success is in your hands!
Is it worth it? If you love what you do – YES! It’s still the best education in the world. Good luck for the future – it’s up to you!
