2. This is like nothing you have ever experienced before.

3. I am not your old High School teacher , I am a Social Worker. • This experience is not about how much you know , it’s about character building ! • Your not in a race for marks……grade additions are a drag and will complicate your learning . • Remember this …..I hate putting a number to anyone's work. • I will always try my best to model best practice at all times.

4. Don’t turtle and hide !

5. Some of you are used to taking a back set • Others feel they have nothing to contribute • A few of you are scared and simply hiding in hopes that I will go away  • Fight this !!!.....your worth hearing from and you have value in this class. • When you choose not to share you cheat all of use out of learning.

6. Don’t jump ship during the storm !

7. There will be times in this class when things will appear stormy and difficult • Things will be upside down and inside out for some of you • Your marks may be taking a beating and you may feel like your sinking!! • Stay on board and NEVER give up…..I will help you ride it out !!! • This experience is designed to challenge you …and it will ! • There will be times when it seems like your fighting me…but really your fighting your self…..remember that ! • If you have an issue with me find the courage to address it professionally with me.

8. Build connections and relationships in this class asap.

9. This entire program is about building and maintaining healthy constructive and professional relationships • You will be expected to model what you are learning ! … “ YOU ARE WHAT YOU DO “ • There is safety and security in numbers • Teaming is important !!!!!!

10. You will respect the Human Services field and each other !

11. There will be times when our values will clash and we disagree • We will love and fight as a family…..there will be times when we will require healing • Never talk over a fellow classmate or devalue their input • This is a BULLYING FREE zone !! • If you make inappropriate comments “ homophobic, sexist, racist or classist ” I will call you out !

12. Become enlightened

13. Be Open minded…….take a risk !!! • Trust me ! • I will lead by example • This may be painful at times….”growing pains” • This process is therapeutic but not therapy ! (Student services will provide assistance.) • At times the cost of enlightenment is leaving others behind.

14. Self discloser

15. Self discloser of personal information is left to each student to decide. • Self discloser can be a powerful way of connecting all of us together …….there is a sacred trust that must be upheld confidentiality !!!! • Students are expected to openly explore them selves in written work……this lends well to deeper self discloser.

16. 1) Self discloser is not meant to foster a pity party. • 2) It is not about out doing another story or experience……it’s not a race or competition. • 3) Do not use self discloser for attention or shock value. • All three of these points ,if unchecked, will lead to an unsafe classroom environment……that cannot happen !!!

17. This might not be for you !

18. Every year we receive students who decide or discover that this is not for them….congratulations !! • It is normal for all of us to have our self doubts….this does not mean you are not suited to be here. • If your having doubts please come see me :)

19. The rescue –VS- The struggle.

20. We all need rescuing from time to time :) • In the field being referred to as a rescuer is “ derogatory “. • There will be times when I intentionally will not rescue students in this class…….my intention is to have you develop the strengths to act independently. • As a section you will be expected to reach out to one another during difficult times……..this behavior is directly linked to your field. • I will be monitoring this !

21. This is a marathon not a 100 meterdash !

22. Pace your self and avoid burn-out. • You can’t do it all …… PRIORITIZE !!!! ……some assignments will appear urgent and hold little to no grade value :( • Prioritizing work load is curtail in the field your going into. • I will not rescue you if you fail to prioritize effectively…..I will allow you to experience the ramifications ! • I will decide if your not suited for this field ….. Not you or another member of this class……just keep moving forward! • I will pull your limp broken body across the finish line if you earn it !

24. Isn't not about the marks it’s about a reference ! …. Can I give you one? • (most commonly asked questions by employers) • What will I say about how you work with others? • …your attendance / work ethic? • …your ability to follow direction and leadership skills? • YOUR ATTITUDE !!! • …Would I hire you ? • I have never been asked about marks….Why ???? • Y O U A R E W H A T Y O U D O ! ! ! ! • What you do is 100% under your control

25. The long term forecast How the semester will flow

26. Septemberis about settling in …. Don’t freak out if you feel over whelmed • October is about finding your way, you will find your groove here • Novemberwill be loaded with assignments from all your instructors, this can become a stressful time ! Push forward !!!! • December, the plan is to have a close team/class. Some will choose to withdraw others will become leaders • the work you produce in late Oct and Nov will insure your success  1st Semester
