2. Purpose of Workshop To explore: • What aspects of the ASALGP have made a difference • What we can do to make sure these things continue And to: • gather inputs for the project completion process (stakeholder workshop)

Project Achievements – Making a Difference • Capacity built at both the individual and organisational level through action oriented technical assistance, study tours, exchanges and partnerships • The creation of knowledge, both technical and management, on matters of concern to local govt in South Africa • The development of a range of tangible ‘products’

Project Processes • An evolving project design process based on the needs of the partners in KZN and FS (identified via consultation and the PCCs) • A series of technical inputs from both Australian and South African advisers • A series of study tours and exchanges • The nurturing of formal and informal partnerships between Australia and South Africa through the Partnership Program

10. Impact Assessment – Has ASALGP Made a Difference? • Most activities have had some level of organisational impact • Most activities have built both individual and organisational capacity (70-80%) • Service delivery has improved to varying degrees • A range of partnerships have been developed • Most (90%) supported the use of practitioners to provide technical advice

Sustainability- Making It Last • Ongoing support needed to build on the work conducted in the provinces and municipalities • Need to ensure continuity of the process of creating new knowledge about what works and what doesn’t • Need to ensure continuity of communication of what has been learnt through the ASALGP • Support needed to maintain partnerships and build new ones

13. Other Issues • Need to better articulate the benefits for the Australian partners of the project ie. local government in WA, SA and Qld • Need to link into South African strategies such as Project Consolidate
