Have You Planned for Your Trip Into Eternity?Luke 16: 19-31 Our culture is fascinated with the spiritual world and various ideas about life after death Dr. Maurice Rawlings
Hell is not a popular topic. Canadian Poll: • 29% believe in heaven • 19% believe in hell. Those who regularly attend a religious service: • 71% believe in heaven • 54% believe in hell In general only 54% of Canadians believe in life after death.
Is there life after death? The Bible says there is an afterlife. Have You Planned for Your Trip Into Eternity? The Parable of the Rich Man & Lazarus • A Contrast in Life • A Contrast in Death • A Commentary on Eternity
1. A Contrast in Life The rich man: Luke 16: 19 [NIV] – “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. • very wealthy • dresses in elegant clothes • “lived in luxury every day” Sometimes prosperity can blind us from even seeing that we have a problem with our priorities.
The poor man: • named: Lazarus Hebrew = “Eleazar” means “God helps or God has helped” • a beggar • poor health: body covered with sores • the epitome of helplessness: Wealth and poverty – side-by-side. The rich man was too busy enjoying the good life to even notice the poor man sitting at his gate
2. A Contrast in Death Luke 16: 22-23 [NIV] - “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.” Lazarus “is carried by angels to Abraham’s side” goes to heaven
The rich man’s wealth could not prevent the inevitable – his time was up The rich man ends up in hell. Proverbs 22:2 [NIV] – “Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all.” Death levels the playing field for everyone. Hebrews 9:27 [NIV] – “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”
The rich man’s destiny teaches us some very important but also terrifying facts: • Hell is Real • Hell is Terrible • Hell is Final v.26 so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ There is no change in direction; no purgatory; no second chances
3. A Commentary on Eternity Luke 16:27-30 [NIV] - “I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’”
“If we read the request [of the rich man] as that of a man’s loving concern for his doomed brothers, we will miss the point and misrepresent hell. Implicit in the request is an attack on God Himself: ‘I didn’t have a fair chance.”Gary Inrig, “The Parables” That’s the excuse of millions of people in this world we live in: If only God would show himself to me. If only God would say something to me. If only God would do some spectacular miracle… I would believe.
God has shown himself to us: His creation • God has spoken into our lives: His Word • God has done spectacular miracles – even raising Jesus from the dead Luke 16:31 [NIV] - “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” The rich man’s problem: his heart was hard towards God and he rejected His Word.
Proverbs 19:17 [NIV]- “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.” 1 John 3:17 [NIV] – “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” The rich man’s callous disregard for Lazarus was a direct rejection of God’s Word.
His unbelief and rejection of God’s Word kept him from heaven. What is your attitude towards God’s Word? The message from God’s Word to us here today is clear: Salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ alone Acts 4:12 [NIV] – “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
Message to the Unsaved • Our present relationship to God and our obedience to His Word in THIS LIFE will determine our eternal relationship with Him in the next life. • Put you trust in Jesus today! Message to the Saved • Our responsibility is to share the Word of God with those who do not know Christ.
The Bible declares: 2 Tim 3:15 [NIV] - You have been taught the holy Scriptures…and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. So the question remains: Have You Planned for Your Trip into Eternity?
