Management and Re-Use of Wastewater pilot in Mithankot Treatment of Wastewater by EM-Technology and Re-Use in Agriculture Sector
Nature Farming Research and Development Foundation • ED: Dr. Tahir Hussain • Presented by • Muhammad Qasim (WWMe: NFRDF)
EM-Technology • EM (Effective Microorganisms) • What is EM. • Species of microorganisms in EM. • All of these are mutually compatible with one another and coexist in liquid culture.
EM potential for wastewater treatment • EM has the potential to deoxidize the heavy metals. • EM stops bacterial action which convert organic matter into ammonia gas. • EM converts organic matter into amminoacids. • Finishes the odour of wastewater and reduces its turbidity. • Kills the harmful bacteria in wastewater. • Improves plant growth, Animal and human health which are in contact with wastewater. • Improves the health of surrounding community by killing hygiene affecting bacteria.
Mithankot Sewerage System • The wastewater originates from the town settlements with a population of about 25,000 people. • The wastewater of Mithankot city is disposed at four different points. • At two point TMA has developed disposal collection wells. • The major wastewater proportion is collected at disposal collection of Nishtar Ghat road.
A Unique System • Wastewater generated in city settlements is collected in two collection wells constructed at disposal collection point. • The water passes firstly from screens installed at screening wells and then collected in collection wells. • From where water is sold to farmers to offset the cost of Water pumping. • TMA contracts a person for this water selling
Action Areas The sewage collection and disposal system of Mithankot is selected for the establishment of Pilot on Wastewater. The resources are meager therefore work will be concentrated in three segments covering three action areas: o First Segment(Community Section) oSecond Segment (Disposal point) oThird segment (Farmer’s Section)
Community Section characteristics • There are two main sewerage lines containing wastewater from all laterals and submain lines in selected area. • The main sewerage lines are underground with manholes. • Laterals and submain lines are of both open and underground type. • Approximately 18,000 people’s Drainage is attached at 2 main sewerage lines. • These sewerage lines convey wastewater to collection wells at disposal point.
Disposal Collection Characteristics • There are two collection wells at disposal point. • One screening wells is attached with each collection well to remove solid waste from wastewater. • The capacities of wells are 166.7m3 (16,67,00L) and 73.12m3(7,31,20L). • Both wells are interconnected by underground pipes. • Both wells have water pumps with electric motors and diesel engine facility to dispose off wastewater to farmer’s fields. • 2 spare pumps with electric motors are installed at bigger well with separate delivery pipes to meet any emergency in case of damage.
Farmer’s Section Characteristics • Total available area for agriculture crops is around 200 Acres. • The 28 farmers are identified using wastewater as source of irrigation in selected site. • 45% farmers are owners and remaining are leasers. • The cropping intensity is around 300% and thus demand for sewage water is high. • The demand of tubewell water increased during the winter due to reduced availability of sewage water. • During summer rainwater and floodwater also contribute to the sewage and it also helps to dilute the sewage. • The common crops in selected area.
There was an urgent need to treat the raw sewage prior to its disposal to the farmer’s fields
Baseline Activities in Mithankot • Samples of soil, groundwater, sewage and plants were collected and analysed. • Measuring scales are installed in collection wells to have measurement of inflows and outflows • To record daily outflow the pumping hours were recorded and discharge of each pump was calculated separately by volumetric and Velocity-Area methods. • An average of 1.6 million liter of water enters into and pumped out from disposal collection wells per day. • Total capacity of two disposal tanks are measured as 166.7 and 73.12m3. Both the wells are interconnected. The Electric motors are of 15 KW and pump’s discharges are 56 lps. • Meetings and presentations were made to various partners for creating awareness and building partnerships.

EM Application to Mithankot Sewerage • EM is applied in three steps according to segments defined. • EM application at grass-root level of wastewater generation • EM application to submain and main lines upstream side of disposal point(1st segment) • EM application in collection wells(2nd Segment) • EM application in wastewater irrigation Channels(3rd Segment)
EM Application in Mithankot sewerage network EM Washroom cleaner Bottles for household use EM Washroom Bottles are supplied twice a month to 100 selected homes.
EM Application in 2 main lines of Mithankot sewerage network EM Application tank installed at Start point of 1st mainline EM Application tank installed at submain line which falls in 2nd mainline at start point.
EM Application in 2 main lines of Mithankot sewerage network EM Application tank Installed at middle of first mainline EM Application tank installed at middle of 2nd mainline.
Farmer’s Trainings to make Organic fertilizer from farmyard and dairy manure by EM use: The Purpose of Training Composting is an effective manure management tool Procedure of Composting by EM
Monitoring of Wastewater Quality after EM Application • The wastewater samples are collected from farmer’s Channel every month and analyzed.
Session With Farmer’s at safe use of Wastewater. A meeting was conducted with wastewater users of project area in Mithankot and a lecture is delivered at safe use of wastewater covering following points. • Wastewater Irrigation is not provided constantly but there should be alternative irrigation of ground water and wastewater. • A mixed irrigation of wastewater and ground water is more preferred. • Irrigation with wastewater should be according to need and stopped at saturation. Field is irrigated with wastewater just when needed. • The growing of root vegetables and leaf vegetables are avoided with wastewater Irrigation. • The vegetables should always be cleaned with fresh water. • During applying wastewater irrigation the worker should follow the precautions and there should not be un-necessary contact of any body part with wastewater.
