  2. Africa • Africa is a large continent. • Its 4x the size of Europe • There are hundreds of different languages. • Sometimes called the “Dark Continent” because little was known about it.

  3. Exploring Africa • Many people began to exploring all of Africa. • Catholic and Protestant missionaries came to Africa as well • The built schools, medical clinics, and churches. • They viewed Africans as children in need of direction.

  4. “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” • Dr. David Livingstone was a well known missionary. • He crisscrossed Africa several times in 30 year. • Dr. Livingstone wrote about the people he met. • After not being heard from in 1871 Henry Stanley (Journalist) found Livingstone in Tanzania.

  5. Berlin Conference • Many countries wanted land in Africa. • To avoid bloodshed, the countries gathered, not in Africa, but in Berlin, Germany • They decided that they could not claim land if there wasn’t a government office there. • 20 years after the conference almost all of Africa was partitioned.

  6. Horrors in the Congo • Belgians used the riches of Congo. • Copper, Rubber, and Ivory • There were rumors of Belgians torturing and brutalizing villagers. • Villagers were forced to work for almost nothing. • They were beaten and had limbs amputated if they refused to work. • Leopold was forced to turn his colony over to the Belgian Government and the abuse ended

  7. The Boer War (1899 - 1902) • In 1806 the Cape Colony in Southern Africa was obtained by the British from the Dutch. • The Boer War was set off by the discovery of Gold and Diamonds. • British Victory

  8. Africans Fight Back • The British battled the Zulus • Germans battled the Yao • French battled the Algerians • Ethiopia prepared for battle and was able to protect is independence.
