South Africa Zulus Led by Shaka. Conquests set off migrations of people to other areas--started other wars.
Europeans Contact with Africans increased when Europeans pushed into Africa. Missionaries followed the explorers. Build schools, chruches, & clinics.
Europeans Took paternalistic view of Aftricans. Treated them like children in need of guidance.
Famous Explorers David Livingstone Henry Stanley-sent to find Livingstone-"Dr. Livingstone I presume."
Belgium King Leopold II hired stanley to arrange treaties with African Leaders.
Europe Belgium caused Britain, France, and Germany to join in the scramble for Africa.
Europe Met in Berlin to divide up Africa. Took more and more resources. Rarely allowed Africans a role in government.
Boer War Diamonds and Gold in southern Africa. Britain fought the Boers for territory. Boerd were descendants of Dutch settlers.
African Resistance Samori Toure fought the French in West Africa. Asante Queen Yaa Asantewaa led the fight against the British. Nehanda of the Shona in Zimbabwe.
Menelik II Modernized Ethiopia. Fought the Italians. Remained independent.
