  2. How do Students Learn? • Many things affect how students learn. They are: • Teacher and Student philosophy on Education and Learning • Modalities: Stimuli which affects student learning and engagement • Multiple Intelligences: Students will understand new information by the use of different intelligences • Outside factors that affect student focus, motivation, and engagement

  3. Philosophy of EducationDiffers from teacher to teacher and student to student • Teacher Philosophies • Essentialism: Teach the core subject areas to students and have them apply what they’ve learned to real life. • Perennialism: Teach through books, ideas, and concepts for the students to develop rational thought. • Student Philosophies • Progressivism: Revolves around curiosity and real-world experiences. • Social Reconstructionism: Focuses on fixing the problems of society and have a natural and moral direction. • Existentialism: Stress student perceptions, decisions, and actions and must evaluate them.

  4. Learning Preferences and Modalities • Stimuli used to affect student learning. • Visual: Learn by what you see; observation • Auditory: Learn by listening • Kinesthetic: Learn by doing; hand-on activities

  5. Multiple Intelligences • How do students learn new material? • Kinaesthetic: Body Smart • Linguistic: Word Smart • Logical: Number Smart • Interpersonal: People Smart • Intrapersonal: Myself Smart • Musical: Music Smart • Visual/Spatial: Picture Smart • Naturalistic: Nature Smart

Factors that Affect Student Learning • Cognitive Domain: The way students retain the information presented to them. • Affective Domain: The attitudes, values, and emotions that affect student learning – i.e. breakup with boyfriend/girlfriend. • Physiology: The basic needs of the student being met – i.e. food and sleep • Student Demographics play a very important role in student learning.
