  1. Directions • As you view the following photographs of people, mark on your handout if you believe the person is an immigrant or not an immigrant. • IMMIGRANT: An individual who was not born in the United States.

Next Step • Now that you have looked at the ten photographs, we are going to “reveal” the ethnic background/history information for each person. • Mark your handout: • 2nd ROUND: Were you correct or incorrect with your original guess? • YOUR REFLECTION: What are your thoughts? How was your first perception challenged, if at all?

  4. BACKGROUND Lynsey K. was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States when she was 14 years old. She attended high school in Vacaville, California and graduated in 2005. In 2007 Lynsey returned to Ireland, unsure of future plans. Immigrant

  5. BACKGROUND Emilia Guadalupe W. and her sister were born and raised in Berkeley, California. Emilia’s mother is Mexican, and her father is Black. Her parents met in Mexico and got married in 1979. Emilia speaks fluent Spanish and travels to visit her mother’s family in Mexico often. She is currently a medical student at the University of San Francisco and her sister is an undergraduate at Stanford University. Not an immigrant

  6. BACKGROUND Anisa W. was born in Somalia, a country in eastern Africa. She immigrated to the United States when she was in elementary school. She was raised in San Diego, California and attended the University of California, Davis. Immigrant

  10. BACKGROUND Ben W. was born in the United States. His father came from Taiwan to the U.S. when he was a kid. Ben W.’s great grandfather and great -grandmother on his mother’s side immigrated to the U.S. from Japan. His great grandfather immigrated (illegally) to the U.S. from Japan via Mexico as a young man. Ben W.’s mother side has been in the United States for 3 generations. Not an immigrant

  11. BACKGROUND Yahsmin Mayaan B. is of mixed background/ ancestry. Her mother is of European descent (Irish and Portuguese) and her father is African American. She was born and raised in California. Not an immigrant
