Cubist Painting A study in Fractured Forms Shattered Spaces Multiple Perspectives
Subject Selection • Choose a subject that: • Appeals to you, is important to you • Is complex and interesting • Lends itself to multiple perspectives • Can be broken apart, rearranged, yet maintains its identity • Draw your subject or find a good picture to guide you
Cubist construction • How will you SHATTER the SPACE? • You can move things that are above to below, behind to the front, or flip all or part of it totally upside down • How will you FRACTURE the FORM? • Your subject is subject to your power to transform. Shape your shape in any way your choose, change and rearrange to create something different, yet the same. • How will you multiply your point of view? • Show your subject from any or all perspectives; backward, sideways, inside-out, and see it ALL at the same time!
The (secret) Next Step • Add a grid pattern of lines on top of your drawing. • Use any combination of lines vertical, horizontal or diagonal. • You are creating a pattern to add complexity or organization depending on whether you need to add more interest or simplify the drawing. • You may even want to use simple SHAPES in the pattern.
The Final Touch: Color • You will use color to further your Cubist aims. • Choose the monochromatic, neutral hues of Analytic Cubism or the bold, pure color of the Synthetic Cubist style • Apply color to EACH space created by the intersection of the contour lines of your drawing and the lines of the grid. • When you move to another space, change to a different color. • Within each color space, apply the paint in a graduated way from light to dark. This is called a value transition. • Your goal is to develop at least 3 different values: the hue, a tint (lighter) and a shade (darker).
