The present study investigated the relationship between the reason individuals tell lies, the type of lies they tell, and their feelings toward lying • To test the following hypothesis: (a) top reasons why people lie would be related to self-esteem and impressing others (b) people lie to keep from hurting others (c) that people who were caught in a lie and lost trust for telling a lie would regret and/or feel guilt for lying. Purpose

  3. The 60 participants were at least 18 years old 18-25: 30 individuals 26-35: 8 individuals 36-45: 15 individuals 46-55: 5 individuals 56+: 2 individuals Participants

Feldman, Forrest, and Happ (2002) • 121 pair of undergraduate psychology student • Each pair had a self-presenter • Given interaction goals (likable, competent, or control) • Had a conversation with a partner they had never met • After the conversation, the self-presenters were asked to listen to the tape of their conversation and identified lies they were telling • Results found • That people given likable and competent goals significantly told more lies than those who were not given a goal • There was not a significant difference between lies told b/w competent and likable goals • Self-presenter who had likable goal told more lies and exxagerations about feelings • Self-presenter who had the competent goal told more lies about their achievements Related Studies

  6. 60 participants were select to take the survey. • The participants were randomly selected • The only requirement was that the participant be at least 18 • The surveys were analyzed collectively and individually Methods and Research

Top 3 reasons participants reported for lying • They didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings • They didn’t want others to know personal information/feelings • To avoid the consequences of something they said or did • Most people told “white lies” and exaggerated the truth frequently • Most people always felt guilty for telling the truth but only regretted telling the lie sometimes • That people who were caught in a lie more frequently as well as those who lost the trust of more people were more likely to regret telling a lie and feel guilty. Some flaws I found in this study: • Participants may not have been completely honest • Vocabulary may have been hard to understand or interpreted differently then intended by the researcher • If I was to continue this study I would: • Look at gender differences • Look at cultural differences • Analyze data based on martial status. • Do a case study Flaws and Moving Forward
