Energy Star™ at 12: the U.S. IT Perspective K. Salaets Information Technology Industry Council (Happy Earth Day!) 1
27 member companies, representing the global leaders in ICT products & services • the lead U.S. industry organization on ICT energy efficiency • collaborated with EPA to launch the Energy Star program 2
In the beginning… ITI endorsed Energy Star over an alternate ‘command & control’ model because it was: • voluntary / simple to understand and administer • supported by a govt./industry partnership • built around reasonable yet challenging specifications that welcomed wide participation • based on supplier’s declaration of conformity • respectful of customer preferences 3
The first 10 years Energy Star thrived under these original principles • expanding to encompass 35 product categories, 1000 manufactures and roughly 7000 products • embraced by Europe, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, New Zealand, Canada, and many U.S. state and local governments • becoming the most widely-recognized environmental label in the world 4
ICT Partners Embraced Energy Star [data from “Energy Star–the Power to Protect the Environment Through Energy Efficiency”] 5
Recent Trends, Concerns • 2002: “Partnership Agreement” imposed without discussion • 2002: “active mode” targeted for first time via draft Monitor MOU despite prior commitments • 2003: international ImTech proposal rejected w/o informing industry members • 2004: “Directional Draft” for imaging products relies on proprietary solutions to achieve goals 6
Keys to a successful program • adherence to Energy Star’s original precepts • recognition that for industry energy efficiency is more than an academic exercise • full partnership and collaboration between industry and government • complete transparency to help instill confidence in the process and outcomes • reliance on credible, verifiable data 7
