The WTP • Emerged out of the Corston Report(2007) • Launched in Cardiff in November 2007 • Aims to provide women offenders, and those at risk of being an offender and/or victim of crime, with a multi-agency, community-based service that addresses individual risk and needs. Evaluation Aims & Methodology • Process and Impact Evaluation • Interviews with 10 women prisoners in HMP Eastwood Park • Interviews with 15 clients of the WTP • Interviews with 7 WTP staff members • Interviews with 3 members of Executive Steering Group • Interviews with staff at 6 referral agencies • Observations of the WTP in day-to-day operation • Shadowing of WTP staff in a variety of contexts • Analysis of record-based data (hard copy and electronic files) Dr. Fiona Brookman, Reader in Criminology, Centre for Criminology, University of Glamorgan

Key Findings: Operational Activities • Referrals • 284 between Nov 07 and March 09 • Caseloads • 58 women currently being provided with assistance in the community • 12 on waiting list • 55 pending in custody Dr. Fiona Brookman, Reader in Criminology, Centre for Criminology, University of Glamorgan

Key Findings: Outcomes • Interview Data: • Clients unanimously positive about their experiences with the WTP • ‘Distance Travelled’ & significant positive change(39 women) • Accommodation: 41% DV: 42% • Offending: 35% Drugs: 33% • Children: 47% Emotional wb:26% • Education/employment: 27% • Case Studies Dr. Fiona Brookman, Reader in Criminology, Centre for Criminology, University of Glamorgan

Conclusions • Lots of evidence of positive work and wide-ranging benefits for the clients. • Need to better document and unravel the reasons for disengagement – is the project ‘failing’ the most difficult to help/chaotic women? • Future of the project and expansion.
