Chapter 6.3 By: Juran and Elisabeth
Functions • Cell wall- help protect the cell (surrounds most bacterial cells) • Cell membrane- controls what passes in/out of the cell • Ribosomes- produce proteins (in cytoplasm) • Nucleoid- DNA (genetic material) • Flagellum- helps a cell to move
Basic Cell Shapes 1.Spherical Shaped 2.Rod-like Shaped • The shape helps identify the type of bacteria 3.Spiral shaped
The Difference between the2 kingdoms(Archaebacteria&Eubacteria) • Archaebacteria I. Live in extreme environments a) hot spring b) acid c) intestines d) swamps e ) sewage II. Archaebacteria produce bad odors. • Eubacteria • I. Don’t live in extreme • environments(ex : live in bodies) • a) help maintain Earth’s • physical conditions • b) help other organisms • to survive.
the differencebetween these kingdoms and other kingdoms • 6 kingdoms : Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protist, Fungi, Plants, and Animals. • Plants • are multicellular • eukaryotes • generally autotrophic-organisms. • Fungi • generally all multicellular, • heterotrophic saprobes meaning they live off dead/decaying organisms for food
Protists • most unicellular-organisms. • Heterotrophic or autotrophic. • Organisms that don't fit into other kingdoms are classified here • large variety of organisms in Kingdom-Protista. • Unlike bacteria, protists are eukaryotes (organisms with cells that contain nuclei). • Animals • Are muliticellular • eukaryotes, • heterotrophic-organisms.
