  3. Revolution of 1830 • Spring of 1830 the elections went against the royalist causing Charles X to dismiss the government • July 26-29 the Three Glorious Days • Troops fail to break into the city of Paris • Charles X abdicated in favor of Louis-Philippe

  5. 1848 • Year of widespread revolts and revolutions • Failure of the Frankfurt Assembly to unify Germany; largely due to Austrian interference • Franz Joseph came to power • Hungary granted almost complete self rule • Revolution in France • Failed uprising in Italy against Austrian control

Napoleon III • Louis Napoleon was elected president with 75% of the vote • Popular with the people • Dec. 1, 1851 seized power after the National Assembly refused to allow him to stand for re-election • Dec. 2 held a referendum to determine if the empire should be re-established • 97% of the vote said yes • Dec. 5 became Napoleon III

  8. Napoleon III • Controlled the army, police, and civil service • First 5 years a success • Remodeled Paris • 1860 legalized labor unions and the right to strike

Crimean War • Siege of Sevastopol 1854-1855 • Treaty of Paris March 1856. • Russia gave up Bessarabia, Black Sea demilitarized, M&W placed under protection of all 5 powers. • Congress of Europe ended. • Austria and Russia became bitter enemies. • Russia and Britain withdrew from continental affairs.
