HISTORY OF GREEN IT • The relationship between Business and IT -Increasing energy cost -Power consumption • IT and Environmental Sustainability -Climate change -unsustainable environment
What is Green IT? • Green Data Center - Virtualization Technology - Server with Green Chip - Cooling System - Green switches/routers -Information Lifecycle Management • Green Working Environment - Manage Desktop PC energy - Convergence:Enable Mobility
SEGWAY • Dean Kamen described the machine as "the world's first self-balancing human transporter. • Unlike a car, the Segway PT only has two wheels, yet it manages to stay upright by itself.
The Segway PT can take you places that a car or bicycle can't - including inside many stores, office buildings, businesses, airports, elevators, and trains. Although they're ideal for short jaunts, Segway PTs can travel as far as 24 miles/38 km on a single battery charge, depending on terrain, payload, and riding style.
The EPA estimates that Americans take 900 million car journeys every day, but did you know that half of these trips are less than five miles long and are by solo drivers? Here is what would happen if you replaced some of those car trips with a Segway PT:
If we are able to replace 10% of 900 million 3 mile car trips with an eco-friendly Segway PT there would be: • 6.2 million fewer gallons of gas consumed. • 286 million fewer pounds of CO2 emitted everyday.
Zero-emissions are given off during operation, allowing you to go indoors with your Segway PT • After one year on your Segway PT you would have literally saved a ton of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
the Segway PT is eleven times more efficient than the average American car, and over three times more efficient than even the highest-mileage scooters.
TEDA Overview • The establishment of Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA) was given government approval on December 6, 1984. One of the country’s first state-class development areas, TEDA has developed into one of the country’s most influential hotbeds for high-tech and new industries.
Four Pillar Industries • TEDA runs four pillar industries: the electronics communications industry represented by Motorola, GS, Samsung, Hyundai and LG, the biomedicine industry represented by Novo Nordisk and SmithKline Beecham , the machinery manufacturing industry represented by Toyota and Volkswagen, and the food and beverage industry represented by Tinghsin Group, Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola.

IBM-Storage Virtualization Software • efficiently manage and consolidate volumes of business data • improve utilization rates, energy efficiency, availability, and scalability of critical applications • SVC 4.3 software
Following Enhancements • Space-Efficient Virtual Disks • Space-Efficient Flash Copy • Virtual Disk Mirroring • Improved Interoperability
Water Cooling to Create Energy Efficient • IBM‘s new Power 575 supercomputer • An innovative water system • Reduce typical energy consumption
ASUS-Green Server • Green Design RS160-E5 • Save up to 45% power loss • Data center can power 15% more
IBM Launches Big Green Linux Initiative • Consume approximately 80 percent less energy • Improve integration between hardware and software • Reduce costs and address environmental concerns
3Com-Green Switch • Strong Leader in Green Networking • Up to 60 percent more energy efficient • Help the environment • Less electricity to power their high-performance networks
Pros & Cons of Green IT Six Examples
New Productions • Corn Ethanol • Biodiesel • Clean Diesels • Hybrids • Electric Vehicles • Hydrogen/Fuel Cells
Corn Ethanol • derived from the sugars in corn and other plants • cut greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 20 percent, compared with gasoline • a shortage of corn available for food • Ford, and Chrysler • FFVs(flex-fuel vehicles) • E85—85 percent ethanol • E10—10 percent ethanol
Biodiesel • renewable fuel made • Mileage : conventional diesels >Biodiesel >gasoline • reduce greenhouse-gas emissions;raise the levels of other pollutants • cause fuel-system problems especially at low temperatures.
Clean Diesels • burn the fuel more efficiently ; trap pollutants better • more energy than gasoline • trucks are diesel-powered • raise the cost by $3,000 or more
Hybrids • recharge the battery • Mileage :25 to 30 percent higher • $2,000 or more to the cost • Toyota and Honda
Electric Vehicles • Any car with a battery-powered motor—including every variety of hybrid—is an electric vehicle to some extent. • Tiny Tesla Motors is building a $100,000 all-electric car, due in 2008 • If the battery technology matures, lithium-powered electric vehicles could be a game-changer, with great driving characteristics, low tailpipe emissions, and super cheap fuel.
Hydrogen/Fuel Cells • more inherent energy than gasoline • A prototype Honda fuel-cell vehicle gets the equivalent of nearly 70 miles per gallon • no distribution system or standardized method of storage, • building a hydrogen infrastructure
Future Topic Green IT - important to Climate-Partner
Important to Climate Partner • Climate protection and sustainabilityare issues, moving people in several branches of this world. One of the most important sectors, the IT-sector is already searching for ways to engage in this important field. It is essential, to give these people strategies and options of action to be able to guarantee sustainability in this sector.
