Agenda • What is “green IT(computing)” • What is virtualization? • Power management system • Pros and Cons
What is “green IT(computing)” • refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT • set of processes and approaches designed to make datacentre's more efficient • This means reducing the power and cooling required. • Reduce energy costs by 80%. • Power down servers without affecting applications or users • Green your datacentre while decreasing costs and improving service levels
What is virtualization ?(Vmware) Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, aserver a storage device network resources.
What does this have to do with virtualization? • For example, many of the suppliers of management software for virtualized environments have the ability to move workloads to a smaller number of servers when workload and service level agreements allow it. Then the unused servers can be powered down. • Features and Benefits • The key benefits of virtual machine technology: • Isolation (One of the key reasons to employ virtualization is to isolate applications from each other) • Standardization • Consolidation (Consolidation of servers results in easier management and decreased hardware costs) • Ease of testing(Most virtual machine software today provides snapshot and rollback capabilities) • Mobility (Virtual machines are easy to move between physical machines)
Power management ? Is a feature of some electrical appliances, especially copiers, computers and computer peripherals such as monitors printers, that turns off the power or switches the system to a low-power state when inactive
Power management • Features and Benefits • Reduce overall energy consumption • Prolong battery life for portable and embedded systems • Reduce cooling requirements • Reduce noise. • Reduce operating costs for energy and cooling. • Using Group Policy to Enforce Power Settings • (The power management policies are located in Power Management, under Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Power Management. Note that there are no power management policies under User Configuration in Windows Vista.)
Pros and Cons PROS • increased worker satisfaction • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to travel • increased profit margins as a result of lower overhead costs for office space, heat, lighting CONS • Security • Availability • Complexity software config • Skills /staff documentation
