ES Case Study for Student ???? Executive Summary of ES Case Study • CX Uni, based in Great Barrier Reef, $10M/yr, 8000 staff, 2500 students (99% are international). • Uses several best-of-breed products for learning management system (BlackBoard etc), along with a somewhat difficult to maintain in-house combination of products called WebFuzzy and OzMossis. • CXU tried to select an ES best-practice in 2000 but failed to convince management to go ahead, thus they reverted to a strategy of improving WebFuzzy • CXU continue to use mostly WebFuzzy but now have trouble maintaining it since it takes a lot of hands-on administrative steps to do routine tasks, therefore students often complain of errors and delays in the learning and assessment processes.
Recommended ES Alternative ES Alternative & Proposed Advantages • If CXU were to chose a full Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard (across all faculties), along with Peoplesoft Student Information System (admin & financials), they could: • Reduce IT staff & hire more qualified-level teachers • Improve data integration and integrity between systems • Reduce mistakes made by faculty and delays • Increase student satisfaction (especially internationals) • CBT and face2face is provided by the LMS vendor • Many existing CXU staff are familiar with LMS • CXU could acquire higher quality teaching staff (as UTS have done), having better research and Phd degrees, reduce dependency on IT staff and faculty needing so much IT experience (for Webfuzzy)
Disadvantages of ES Alternative ES Alternative Disadvantages • Staff and student resistance: no one likes change • Data conversion of course structure & student info • Links between course & faculty scheduling complex • Training will take awhile, CXU operates all year! What could be done to overcome above • Incentives for faculty to convert their courses • Self-directed learning for power users & peer training • Involve staff, admin. & students (union) in the project • Ask students for understanding & cooperation • Follow UTS example for LMS (ES) adoption in education: • Focus on teaching staff quality (provides expertise to win student acceptance when programs & systems are more focused on learning) • Make all processes consistent, have a business mentality • ideology: client focus, quality staff, reduce dependency on IT • adapt LMS (ES), don't customise, use ES only functions needed
Conclusions & References Recommendation Summary • Main ES alternative recommendation was ??? • Main beneft of this recommendation ??? • Main drawback from this alternative ???
