Wisdom Think about someone you know who is wise. What do they do or say that makes them wise? Cross Training
Wisdom and Revelation • “This is the core of all Biblical thoughts: God is not a being detached from man to be sought after, but a power that seeks, pursues and calls upon man.” • Abraham Heschel, God in Search of Man. • The significance of a God who speaks to us and pursues us. • How does God reveal himself? What is our responsibility to that revelation? Cross Training
Proverbs 8:22-36 22 “The Lord possessedme at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth,26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. Proverbs 8:22-36 27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,28 when he made firm the skies above, when he establishedthe fountains of the deep,29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,30 then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily hisdelight, rejoicing before him always,31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. Proverbs 8:22-36 32 “And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways.33 Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.34 Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord,36 but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Cross Training
Creation • What is the significance of Wisdom’s presence in and with creation? Cross Training
Psalm 19 1The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky aboveproclaims his handiwork.2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. Psalms 19 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;the rulesof the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Cross Training
Psalm 19 12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me!Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Obedience and Wisdom Fearing the Lord Wisdom Obedience, Walk in his way Cross Training
Law as Wisdom • Obedience • Hearing and Seeing • Walking in his ways and fearing him • Deuteronomy 8:6 – “So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.” • Q: What does it mean that fearing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom? Cross Training
Psalm 19 • God created us and the world around us with wisdom. • God gives us wisdom to understand him; he speaks and we listen. • The appropriate response to God speaking is obedience. • Obedience is seeing and hearing; walking in his ways and fearing him. • When we live like this, we are living in wisdom. Fall: Isaiah 30:9-14 9 For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord;10 who say tothe seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right;speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions,11 leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.” Cross Training
Fall: Isaiah 30:9-14 12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel,“Because you despise this word and trust in oppression and perverseness and rely on them,13 therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach in a high wall, bulging out, and about to collapse, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant;14 and its breaking is like that of a potter's vessel that is smashed so ruthlesslythat among its fragments not a shard is found with which to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.” Cross Training
Fall: Isaiah 30:9-14 • From creation we learned that God invites us to hear him speak to us. • What is the effect of the fall on our sense of hearing? • What does Isaiah suggest we tend to do now with God’s revelation? Cross Training
Fall: Amos 8:11-12 11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. 12They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east;they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.” Cross Training
Redemption: Isaiah 30:18-36 • 18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. • 19 For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you. 20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. Redemption: Isaiah 30:18-36 21And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. 22 Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold-plated metal images. You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, “Be gone!” 23And he will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and bread, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. In that day your livestock will graze in large pastures, 24 and the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat seasoned fodder, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. Cross Training

Redemption: Isaiah 30:18-36 • …29You shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel. 30 And the Lord will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones. 31 The Assyrians will be terror-stricken at the voice of the Lord, when he strikes with his rod. 32 And every stroke of the appointed staff that the Lord lays on them will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres. Battling with brandished arm, he will fight with them. 33 For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it. Redemption: Christ as Wisdom • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. You know him, for he dwells with you and will bein you.18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Cross Training
Consummation: John 14:15-27 • 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. Cross Training
Consummation: John 14:15-27 • 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. Cross Training
