The Dominican Republic • a nation that is the eastern two-thirds of island Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. Hispaniola’s western side is Haiti , making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are shared by two countries. • Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation after Cuba with 48,442 square kilometers (18,704 sq mi) and an estimated 10 million people.

Meals • El desayuno (breakfast) • Boiled roots/plantains, which fill the stomach • El almuerzo (lunch) • Rice and beans are always eaten during lunch, the most considerable meal of the day. A siesta normally occurs afterward • Dinner • Consists of boiled roots, eggs, mashed potatoes, bread, spaghetti, and sometimes a plantain dish called mangu. Mangu Sancocho
