  3. English Translation: Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India's destiny. The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha, of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal; it echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of the Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise. The salvation of all people is in thy hand, thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to thee.

  4. National Emblem • The Four Lions symbolize power, courage and confidence. • The smaller animals around the base are the guardians of the four directions. The lion of the norht, the elephant of the east, the hourse of the south and the bull of the west. • The base rests on a lotus, symbolizing life and creative expression. • The motto 'SatyamevaJayate' means ‘truth alone triumphs.’

  5. India’s Past India has had continuous civilization since 2500 B.C. The British ruled India as a colony since the early 1600s. Two Groups of India: Hindus- Majority group (82%) Muslim- Minority group (12%)

  8. Freedom Fighter • Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) • Advocated nonviolence protests for the Indian Independence movement • Conducted hunger strikes • Believed in the unity of all people in India and was against the partition of India.

Gaining Independence • The Desire for Independence grew with the Formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885. • The British Government did not comply with Congress, leading to even more demand for indepedence. • 1920-1922- the Non-cooperation Movement, followed by the Civil Disobedience Movement • 1942- Quiet India Movement, led by Gandhi

  10. Finally- Independence! • The British Parliament signed the Indian Independence Act in July 1947, which freed India from British rule as well as partition the country into two independent entities- India and Pakistan.
