More Than Nets A two- year comprehensive project of Virginia and Ghana Baptists to Reduce Malaria and Support Ministry and Church Planting in Yendi, Ghana
Malaria prevalence in ghana In the Northern regions of Ghana, malaria prevalence is over 90%.
Malaria in ghana • Malaria claims twice the number of African children as AIDS each year. • Over 1 million people die from malaria annually. • 90% of all cases of malaria are found in Africa. • Pregnant women and children under the age of 5 are most susceptible to malaria.
More than nets • Rev. Emmanuel Mustapha (Muss) • By 2015, he and other pastors hope to plant 1,000 churches in the northern region of Ghana. • More Than Nets Goals: • 2 years • $1 million • 100,000 nets • 186,000 people protected • A church in every village (454 churches)
More Than Nets • $10 provides one net and more • $6 purchases the actual net • $1 provides transportation to get each net from Accra (capitol city in the south) to Yendi (in the north) and then to each village • $2 provides health education through local nurses and public health workers • $1 purchases Bibles, a set of drums and assists church planters to continue the ministries in the villages
Nets - $6How do they work? • Physical barrier against the mosquito • Chemically treated to kill mosquitos that come within proximity of the net • Placed around beds • Mothers typically sleep in one bed with their young children
Nets - $1TransportationWhy Use Nets? • When used properly, the nets can kill the entire population of mosquitos in an area. • Mosquitos are most active between midnight and 4:00 a.m. • Vaccinations are costly and have yet to be proven successful
Health education - $2 • $2 of each net goes toward education • Nurses and trained professionals will follow up in the area to teach ways to reduce risks for malaria. • Trained leaders will distribute the nets and provide follow up visits to ensure that they are being used properly
Church planting - $1 • Ghanaian church planters preach in the villages • Church leaders are chosen from the village and then trained by church planters • Drums and Bibles will assist the church grow
How can we help? • PRAY • Malaria will be reduced and eventually eliminated in this area. • God’s love will be understood and spiritual needs will be met. • Muss’s ministry will continue to grow through the relationships with local government and villages.
