Lesson Objectives • By the end of this section you will understand: • The different types of funding available for sport. • How professionalism changes sports. • The role the media plays in sport and the effects that media coverage has had on the structure of sports. • The influence and ethics of sponsorship in sport.

  3. Funding • There are many different sources of funding for sport in the uk. The main ones are: • Sport England • • Home country sports councils • • National Lottery* • • Lottery funded programmes and initiatives • • Foundation for Sport and the Arts* • • Sportsmatch* • • Sports Aid* • • Local authorities • • Governing bodies • • European Union • • Football Trust • • Trusts & foundations • • Fundraising from the community • • Commercial sponsorship • • Publications on fundraising *We will focus on these 3

  4. These sources of funding are split into 3 categories: The Public Sector: Government funding / grants The Private Sector: Companies whose aim is to make money but who also help to fund sport. The Voluntary Sector: National Governing Bodies and local private clubs which exist for their members.

  5. Sport funding has good and bad effects.

  6. Organisations Involved in Funding Sport A charity set up in 1998. It is funded by sponsorship from companies and donations from individuals and companies. It gives grants to talented able bodied and disabled performers who don’t qualify for the ‘World Class’ Programme. A grass roots sponsorship scheme run by the institute of sports sponsorship, whereby the government matches the sponsor’s donation, thereby doublin the value of grass roots sponsorship Since 1994 the National Lottery has provided more than £200 million a year to sports. The money is distributed to the five sports council for England, Wales, Scotland, N Ireland and Ireland. The council then make their own funding decision without political interference.

  7. The National Lottery and Excellence: UK Sport distributes £25 million of lottery funding to the ‘World Class Performance Programmes. It also funds the UKSI and its coaches, sports science backup, warm weather and acclimatisation training, travel and accommodation for competition, athlete development programmes and training facilities. The Lottery and Mass Participation: The National Lottery Provides funding for individuals, sports clubs, local government and the NGB’s of sport. Over £1 billion of lottery money has been awarded to over 3,000 community sports projects all over the country.

  8. Professionalism In all sports with strong media links, professionalism is a reality. Professionalism in this sense means a shift of power from unpaid amateur administrators to paid professionals. What sports in recent times have changed from an amateur to a professional sport?

  11. Roles of the Media Sport is a central feature of TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, the internet, books, videos and DVD’s. Media, especially T.V has had a profound effect on contemporary sport. In the early 1950’s, fewer than 10% of British households had a T.V. By late 1960’s, only 10% did not.

  12. The media has four main roles to: Inform Newspapers, magazines, results, radio, rule changes Entertain Quiz’s, live coverage. Educate Documentaries, coaching videos. Sponsorships, adverts, event previews. Advertise

  13. In the 1950’s, the government, the BBC and ITV identified and agreed on 9 sporting events that should ‘belong’ to everyone and not be given exclusive coverage by one t.v organisation.   14. The Effects of the Media on Sports What rule changes have come about in sport for the purpose of making them more entertaining for the public? Formula 1 Passback rule A1 Racing 6 second rule Rugby League Offsides in hockey

  15. Discuss the potential value of the following actual or proposed changes to rules and format to; The players, to the game, to spectators. Rugby Union – Change from two halves to four quarters. Football – increase the size of the goal. Goal less draws replaced by a 15 minute period of golden goal extra time. Tennis – Limit the length of rallies – score on every point Cricket – One day games, floodlit games with multicoloured strips, restriction of field placings to discourage defensive play and encourage big hitting. Tennis – The tie break.

  16. What are the positive and negative outcomes of the media in sport? Think about how sport was different before T.V was invented.

Positives • Produces positive role models • Brings sports to millions of people • Channels like Sky Sports give exposure to sports such as netball and wheelchair basketball which can change societies attitudes • May inspire participation (rugby world cup 2003) • Advanced technology such as the 3rd umpire in cricket and slow motion replays can ensure fairness as well as educate and inform. • Rules are changed to make sport more entertaining.

Negatives • Sports stars lose their privacy and become public figures • Channels select which sports they consider to be entertaining to the detriment of others (especially womens and disabled sport) • May encourage passive spectatorism (couch potato) • A focus on the dramatic and spectacular. E.g the violence in ice hockey portrays an unrealistic image of the sport as a whole.

  22. Sponsorship is the provision of funds or other support to individuals, teams, events and organisations in order to get favourable publicity and commercial return. Carling’s sponsorship of the Premiership cost £12 million over 4 years and Beefeater Gin spent £1.35 million to sponsor the boatrace even though it only lasts for half an hour a year. Why would these companies spend so much?

  27. You are a company wishing to invest £500,000 in sponsoring a sports team. Will you invest in: The English women’s netball team? The British Paralympics team? A League 1 men’s football team (Swansea, Milton Keynes, Huddersfield etc?) Decide on a product that your company sells and come to a decision. Think about: Who is going to see your product? How often are they going to see your product? Is your product suited to the sport?
