  2. Definitions • Prophecy: to foretell events, divine, speak under inspiration, exercise the prophetic office. • Tongues: spoken language

  3. Tongues in Scripture • The Day of Pentecost • The house of Cornelius • The Converts of Ephesus

  4. The Final Authority • Both Prophecy and Tongues have stopped functioning today with the completion of God’s Word. • Therefore in this passage we are dealing two past gifts that are not being used by the Spirit today.

  5. Edification • Tongues • Edifies the man • It is self indulgent • Prophecy • Edifies the Church • This is the greater gift

  6. Understanding • Tongues • Tongues have no meaning without an interpreter. • Tongues have no value by themselves. • It’s like talking to a foreigner.

  7. Understanding • Prophecy • They are both direct revelation from God • Prophecy just cuts out the middle man • All can understand and be edified.
