Primary Scriptures Ephesians 4: 1-16; Romans 12; I Cor. 12-14; 1 Pet 4:7 Where do gifts come from? I Cor. 12:7 “now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” NIV I Cor. 12:11 “All these are work of one and the same spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.” NIV continued
I Cor. 2:6-13 Understanding Holy Spirit’s relationship with believer • For spiritually mature • God’s wisdom destined in Christ before time began • No one understands what God has prepared for those who love him except as revealed by His Spirit • Spirit searches all things even deep things of God • Received Spirit of God to understand what God gives us • Not taught by human wisdom but by Spirit • Folly to the unspiritual • We are instructed to have mind of Christ
Who is given a spiritual gift? I Pet 4:10 “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in it’s various forms.” NIV When we by grace through faith accept Jesus as Lord and Savior Holy Spirit now resides in us…will teach us in all things of grace, love, maturity, unity, peace, etc. …to be a blessing
Analogy of the Body Romans 12: 1-2 12:1: Offer bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing • This is spiritual worship 12:2: Do not conform to world • Be transformed by renewing mind 12:3: Then able to test and approve God’s will
Analogy of the Body Romans 12: 3-21 12:3-6: Think of self with sober judgment • One body with many members • Each member belongs to the other • We have different gifts according to grace 12:9-16 Living in brotherly love within body • Do not repay evil for evil • Live at peace with everyone • Overcome evil with good
Difference between Talents and Gifts Every one is born with natural talents Every one who is reborn in Christ has talents and is given spiritual gift(s) Talents make us one of a kind Belong to Christ’s Body Gifts are to serve, build up God’s church Give self-identity God serving Self serving (but in maturity of faith even talents can glorify God)
Crossover of Talents and Gifts Natural talents can intersect(be transformed) with spiritual gifts • Often God does use natural talents and once graced with the spiritual gift become part of the body: ex: teaching, leadership, administration, mercy. • Paul’s desire to serve His God – desire embellished when spiritual gifts matured (faith, exhortation, etc.) • Acquaintance (Nancy) beauty queen with a beautiful voice. Later as a believer she sang about God’s love for His people. (exhortation/evangelism/music) • Kirk Cameron, actor, now is fully involved as a Christian in producing and acting in movies that bring people to God. continued
Crossover of Talents and Gifts Natural talents do not always intersect with spiritual gifts For instance: basketball, scrapbooking, gardening, mechanic, video games, handyman etc. are for personal enjoyment or work, but do not edify the church or God. Transform weakness to spiritual gift – from no natural talent Example of Benni Hinn: public speaker 2 Cor. 12:9-11 “My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness.” NIV
Why know spiritual gift(s)? I Cor. 14:1 Eagerly desire gift. Follow ways of love I Cor. 12:1 Don’t be ignorant I Tim 4:14 Do not neglect your gift 2 Tim 1:6-7 Fan into flame the gift. Our Response • Stewardship: time, talent, and treasure • Gratitude, thanksgiving – privilege and responsibility • Blessed to be a blessing - Maturity of self and for others • Strengthen church for administering Great Commission Martin Luther said, “I believe that in this congregation, the church, all things are common, that everyone’s possessions belong to the others and that no one has anything of his own; therefore, all the prayers and good works of the whole congregation must help, assist and strengthen me and every believer at all times, in life and death, an thus each bear the other’s burden as St. Paul teaches.”
How to grow in faith with Spiritual Gifts? • Identify spiritual gift through various tools and assessments: honestly with prayer, trust, submission • Discovery, develop, experiment • Develop attitude of confidence not fearful • Pick out verse(s) that relate to your gift and keep them nearby • Include worship, Bible reading, study, prayer, fellowship, stillness with God as part of faith walk • Ask yourself, am I maturing in my gift…If not, ask for help
How to strengthen others • Encourage one another in gift (knowing it comes from the Lord) • Accept with faith that each believer has a spiritual gift(s) (NO MATTER WHAT AGE OR OUTSIDE APPEARANCE OR ECONOMIC STATUS) • Allow others to grow in their gift BUT HOLD ACCOUNTABLE • Mentor and assist
