The Great Pumpkin Mystery By Mrs. Wisdom’s Class ?????????????
Our class got a pumpkin and carved a Jack-o-Lantern. We loved him! We wanted to keep him forever, but something weird began to happen
Our Jack-O-Lantern’s mouth began to droop and we noticed an AWFUL smell.
We decided to visit Jackoften. On our first visit, we noticed something VERY CREEPY
We noticed that black and gray fluffy stuff was growing inside him. The next week his face started to cave in.
What is happening to Jack? He is getting smaller – Brandon He is rotting – Sarah He is rotting – Abby Eewww – Evelyn The black stuff is eating him – Jeremy He is rotting – Jackson He is ugly – Roderick He is shrinking – Segen Some little bugs are eating him – Erin He looks bad – Manuel He is getting shorter – Manavi He is getting yucky – Victor He is rotting. I saw a rotten apple and it had brown stuff on it –Logan He is getting gross. - Kirsten
But WHY?? • Idea 1: Things just rot in the air and go away. • Idea 2: The black things ate the pumpkin. • Idea 3: Tiny bugs ate the pumpkin.
How We Solved the Mystery We read some books and looked up pumpkins on the computer. We found out: All fruit rots. The fruit rots so the seeds can get out and make new plants. The pumpkin has things in it that start the outside melting down. Once the melting starts, tiny animals and plants live off the pumpkin. The black and gray stuff is mold – a fungus. It is bad for you. You can’t eat it. The tiny bugs were fruit flies. They eat rotting fruit. Ants also came to eat Jack. POOR JACK!
We Solved the Mystery The bad news is: You can’t keep a Jack-o-Lantern forever. They rot and smell bad. The good news is: You can keep some seeds and plant a new pumpkin for next year.
