BFK•Link® Community Edition Measures Built on Trust
Our Agenda The Opportunity The Challenge The Solution The Rollout Q&A Post Script…How It Works
The OpportunityMeasuring Our Success “With increased accountability, American schools and the people who work in them are being asked to do something new—to engage in systemic, continuous improvement in the quality of the educational experience of students and to subject themselves to the discipline of measuring their success by the metric of students’ academic performance.” Richard Elmore, Bridging the Gap between Standards and Achievement
The OpportunityIt’s a New World… Student success has been measured by teachers for years. Now, teacher success is measured by their students’ success or perceptions. Teacher effectiveness is in the spotlight. What does it take to build measures we can all trust?
The OpportunityOur Success Depends on Trust Reliable measures for: Student growth, Student perceptions, and Observations of teacher practice. This begins with reliable data describing not just the teacher of record, but a record of teachers.
The ChallengeMini-Case Study • Mr. Rodriguez receives his value-added report. • He is recognized for high performance in teaching science. • But he’s a math teacher…
The ChallengeErrors that Erode Trust • State-level challenges • Moment-in-time reporting • Alignment of courses and subject tested areas • Unique student and teacher IDs • Teacher of record • District- and school-level challenges • Course scheduling • Student mobility • Shared instruction or co-teaching • Charter school updates
The ChallengeLearning Experiences Are Complex… • How can data systems account for all of the nuances? • Student mobility • Support or enrichment provided by multiple teachers • Maternity leave, sick time, new hires, resignations, and retirement • Teachers regrouped or reassigned to other classrooms • Co-teaching arrangements • And the list goes on…
The SolutionBuilding Trust ? Teachers
The SolutionTeacher Engagement • Teachers know which students they are responsible for teaching. • We give teachers class rosters they can literally see and believe in… • Laying the groundwork for better effectiveness measures, including: • Student growth, • Student perceptions, and • Observations of teacher practice.
The SolutionBenefits • Educators play an active role in validating instructional schedules for accuracy. • Increases confidence in teacher-student linkages. • Securely and efficiently collects essential data and information for teacher-level measures. • Improves data quality for high-stakes measures of student progress and teacher effectiveness. • Software license offered at no cost to districts and states for their non-commercial use.
The RolloutEasy as 1–2–3 Support TeamTraining Jan. 19 School-BasedTeacher Training Jan. 31 2 3 1 Begins: Jan. 30 Due: Feb. 14 Due: Jan. 27 Principal Final Approval and Submission Due: Feb. 24
One Last Thing… When teachers are involved, they have more trust in the data being used to measure the impact of their efforts.
Linkage Process • Starts with best data available – usually local SIS • School Setup • Initial administrator review of instructional schedules • Teacher Linkage – Typically Core 3–8 Teachers • Whom did you teach? • When were they members of your class? • For how much of the instruction were you responsible? • Submit verified rosters for review and approval • Review and Approval • Final administrator review and approval of rosters
Review and School Setup Kathleen teaches Social studies. Teaches all students Not just the 14. Take a look at instructional schedules to see how reflective starting data is to actual practice.
Teacher Linkage BFK•Link® Community Edition is a Web-based tool that begins with a list of teaching assignments or courses requiring linkage. What do you know about the teacher from the courses listed above? Self-contained 4th Grade Or is this a “home room scheduling artifact of the SIS?”
Main Linkage Screen Linkage should be “true” when “read.” If it is not, then make the appropriate corrections.
Step 1: Review and Modify Course Rosters Add, Remove, Copy or Synchronize Students from the roster.
Step 2: Class Membership or Mobility Make adjustments to the starting and ending months to indicate each students’ time spent in your classroom. If a student was in your class, moved to another, and returned, use the Advanced Mobility to indicate linkage by month.
Step 3: Indicate % Instructional Responsibility In most cases, teachers will set all students at 100%. Team teaching situations might share student instruction at 50% each. A special education teacher may claim a student for as little as 20% (approx. 1 day per week).
Administrator Review/Approval • Changes to course rosters can be reviewed and submitted for principal approval. • Updates to course rosters can be made until the principal has reviewed and approved the linkage. • Error Reports and Alerts are available to enable administrators to address every child. • Student-Subject Coverage • Over- and Under-claimed Students • Unclaimed students
Reviewing Linkage for Errors This looks wrong. I missed this on my plan.
