  2. Social Networks • Association of people drawn together by family, work or shared activities.

  3. Strategy Box 14.1 • Make contact information available to each family • Make every meeting interactive • Make special effort to connect families who may be slow to engage • Facilitate connections between families whose children are connecting

  4. Forms of Social Networks • Neighborhoods • Nearby friends and/or family • Groups coalesce around shared values or meaning

  5. Community Resources Three trends that increase the need for social networks: • Employed mothers • Economic challenges • The feminization of poverty

  6. Six Families • Select the family you worked with in the Chapter 11 activity • Identify the community resources that assisted this family to reduce the stressors and grow toward success. What strengths do you see in the family now?

  7. Community Connections • Each family in this chapter relates to their community in unique ways. • In your own community there are many resources: some similar, some specific to local needs. How many are you familiar with?

  8. Some Community Resources • Parks and Recreation • Libraries and Local Museums • Community College • Head Start and Early Head Start • County Health (services and education) What else can you think of?

  9. Availability of Resources • Finding resources • Access can be limited • Funding can be a problem • Lack of transportation • Known and unknown values (worth investigating)
