Leadership A Biblical Model
Barnabas- the man behind the first century mission movement • Leadership grew out of servant life-style. Acts 4:36-37. • Look for God-signs/God’s work in other’s lives. Acts 9:26-28. • Fan’s the Spirit’s fire rather than quenching it. Acts. 11:19-24. • Provides a platform for ministry to emerge. Acts 11:25,26 (not threatened by other gifted leaders).
Recognizes when God’s gifting and call move others into leadership roles. Acts. 13:2,3 with Acts 13:13. • Deeply committed to those he mentored. Acts 15:37 ff. • Does not allow significant disagreement to poison relationships. 2Tim. 4:11; Philemon 24
Lessons from Leadership experiences. • Learn from and listen to older Godly examples. • Lean hard on the Lord and recognize your own weakness and inadequacy. Keep up your spiritual disciplines. • Pay attention to the word. After spending the first five years of my leadership reading and taking seminars on leadership I resolved to spend more time in Scripture than in reading the latest leadership theories. (I did continue to read leadership and management books).
Invest in others and provide platforms for their gifts. • Take risks, especially when Kingdom advance is at stake. • Work to build consensus and include others in decisions. Don’t be a loner. • Let the Lord be the judge. I Cor. 4:5.
