  4. Colonialism • Africa – Rich in resources 1. People – Humans 2. Materials • Colonialism: one country’s control over another’s territory and people. • Implies economic domination. • Superiority and inferiority – indigenous – less power • Take over = more power

When the country pulls out… • Colonialist country pulls out = power vacuum • Indigenous people fight for power • Resources • Civil war – Power and Control split on Ethnic, Religious, Race • Ingredients for genocide • Imperialism: The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.

  8. Hutu Power • An estimated 500,000 people died in the genocide • Ethnic Cleansing: a campaign of forced expulsion, often involving beatings, rape, and murder, in order to clear an area of unwanted inhabitants. The U.N. was in Rwanda the entire time.
