The Global Refugee Crisis and the Local Church (in Africa) WEALI webinar, July 1, 2014
Refugee Situation in Africa • Critical and growing because of conflict and forceful displacement of people. • In the East and Horn of Africa alone, UNHCR reckons that about 1.8 million refugees and more than 3M IDPs (include 340,000 in Dadaab) • 11M people of concern in Africa in 2014, including stateless people and returnees.
Leading Host Nations…. • Kenya is largest refugee hosting country in Africa, followed by Chad and Ethiopia. • Largest single refugee camp in Northern Kenya comprises 350,000 Somali refugees, as many as you have in Ethiopia. • Somalia, DRC, Sudan, South Sudan, CAR and Eritrea contribute largely to the increasing population of people of concern
Causes of Forceful Displacement • Conflict- political, religious, land, resources, ethnic, economic, violation of dignity etc. • Environment factors/climate change- drought, inadequate grazing grounds, infertile ground for agricultural production • Less water sources for drinking and domestic use • Hunger, disease and poverty
Critical Needs of Concern • Basic needs of food, shelter and clothing • Peace and Security • Trauma healing • Love and care • Protection of human rights and freedoms • Disease, health and sanitation • Education and growth of children
Mitigation- Role of the Church • Practice of religion and teachings of Jesus on plight of refugees (Matt. 25: 31-40): Mobilize Prayer and Care • Lead Agency for care and coordination services to refugees in camps • Counseling and Trauma healing • AEA partnership with RHP to coordinate work of churches and other NGOs
Mitigation cont….. • Advocacy- speaking out against anti-immigrant attitudes • Advocating for the rights of refugees and immigrants • Learn more about refugee and immigration issues • Resettle refugees in our communities • Addressing root causes of humanity vulnerability (Sin and salvation)
