About Us… Psychology is the 4th largest major at SUNY Oneonta There are approximately 350 students majoring in Psychology The department offers both the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degree We are located in Fitzelle Hall
The Faculty The Department currently has 9 full-time faculty members, all of whom have obtained their Ph.D.’s. Each member serves both as a teacher and an academic advisor. This includes: 7 Full Professors 1 Associate Prof. 1 Lecturer More info
Psi Chi Is the National Honor Society in Psychology for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Mission: • Advance science and the profession of psychology • Promote an educational experience consistent with the mission • Promote ethical and socially responsible members and leaders • Define and establish an organizational structure that promotes the mission
The Psychology Club Is a student-run organization with a goal to inform, involve, and enhance the lives of psychology majors at Oneonta State. The club meets weekly to: • Assist psychology majors with academic information, research projects, etc. • Organize on-campus events in conjunction with other clubs. • Work with the community through service projects.
Major Requirements…The Psychology Major requires a variety of courses in order to ensure well-rounded graduates. • Introduction to Psychology • Statistics in Psychology • Research Methods in Psychology • Social Psychology • Personality Theory • Developmental Psychology
Also Required… • 6 credits in a 300 level psychology course • 3 credits from a range of courses including Cognitive Psychology, Psychology of Memory…. and many more to choose from • 3 credits in a diversity requirement (e.g. Psychology of Women)
Special Opportunities for Psychology Majors… • Teaching Assistantship • Independent Studies • Internships
Teaching Assistantship • Earn credits by working with the psychology department faculty. • Assist in teaching classes. • Tutor individual students and hold study sessions for groups of students. • Work on various research projects…many of which are presented at national conventions.
Internships • Students gain valuable field experience while earning a degree • Students can choose from various internships offered, such as: • Violence Intervention Program • St. James Manor Adult Home • Fox Hospital Crisis Center

Graduate School • Many of Oneonta’s psychology majors choose to go to graduate school. • Our psychology department will be glad to help students find a graduate school that will meet all of their needs and concerns.
Outlook after Graduation… Psychology majors find jobs! Almost 80% of Psychology majors have found employment. Less than 5%, who are seeking employment, have been unsuccessful. (Based on National Data)
