  3. Volunteering • Definition: serving without pay • Why: when others are happy, I am happy as well! • Currently, only 36% of 18% of the population are volunteering at least once a month. Individual Giving Survey 2014

  4. Common causes • Animals • Children • Environment • Special needs • Elderly (I am here!)

  6. Why elderly befriending? • “The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.” – Mother Teresa • Increasing dementia, depression and suicide rates The ageing population is a real issue!

  7. Why elderly befriending? • 460,900 elderly in Singapore • 900,000 by 2030 • If we do not try to understand them now, when will we start? Asia (CNBC) Global (UN)

  8. It’s not just us helping them • We will be old one day too • Each elderly has a unique life story to share, and things to teach Sewing Cooking Staying healthy Having fun

  17. Doubts I have no skills. How do I contribute? • “Our presence is the best present” • Skills can be learned • Only need an open mind Relevance to IBDP • CAS requirement • Useable IA examples • Reference letters

Challenges Studies Family Time • Balance is important • I studied too much in IB • 4h/month is enough Language barrier • HCIS teaches Mandarin • Love is a universal language • Our elderly can sense sincerity Elderly Friends Priority (make time) Exercise Projects Everything else Non-priority (find time)

  19. Challenges Passion What other volunteers say Serving the elderly who anticipate our visitations week after week brings me joy! My work is tiring and the schedule is unpredictable, so volunteering can be a challenge. – Nigel, 24 The elderly are lonely. Do I need any other reason to volunteer? It is a challenge to balance my time between ageing parents and 6 growing kids. – Mandy, 46 I try to contribute my experience wherever I can. Commitment is always an issue. I have my own bucket list to fulfil as well! – David, 67
