Liturgy • In most traditions the liturgy consists of four parts: • Gathering • Hearing God’s Word • Responding To God’s Word • Sending Forth
Liturgical Elements • Call to Worship • This is often a specific set of scriptures or other confessional statements to begin worship
Liturgical Elements • Collect • A prayer in five parts that precedes the lessons appointed and that is specific to a certain day, theme, or church season • The Parts of a Collect • Address to God • An Attribute of God • Petition • Result of Petition • Doxology or Conclusion
Liturgical Elements • Eucharist - a.k.a. Communion, The Lord’s Supper, etc. • Includes taking, blessing, and sharing the bread and wine in a gathered community. • The liturgy commonly used here is The Great Thanksgiving found on page 13 of The United Methodist Hymnal
Liturgical Elements • Fraction • The act of breaking bread for communion • Intinction • The act of dipping the bread into the wine or juice.
Liturgical Elements • Gloria • Short for Gloria in Excelsis, borrowed from Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest” • Kyrie • Another Latin phrase/canticle. This time, typically sung phrase Kyrie eleison, which means “Lord have mercy.”
Liturgical Elements • Sanctus • Another Latin phrase, but we almost always sing or say in the Communion prayer as “Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of power and might.” • Versicles and Responses • These are the things the congregation says when prompted. • For example: “The Word of God for the people of God.”
Sacred Furniture • Altar - a.k.a. the little table in front of the pulpit • Ambo • The lectern or pulpit. An ambo is a little different from either of those items because it includes a reading desk.
Sacred Furniture • Font • Keep it filled with water and you can be ready for baptism. Some are big enough to fully immerse people. Others, like ours, are just big enough to be heavy. • Credence Table • Holds the elements before communion
Sacred Objects • Linens: • Four types: • Fair Linens • The linen used to cover the table • Purificator • A small linen used to hold the bread and the cup • Palls • Used to cover the chalice and flagon • Corporal • Used to keep crumbs and wine off of the fair linen
Sacred Objects • Paschal Candle - a.k.a. The Christ Candle • Pillow • The gold book stand used to prop up the book of worship during Communion
Sacred Objects • Vessels • Used to hold the elements for Communion • Paten - used to hold the bread • Chalice - used to hold the wine or Welch’s • Flagon - pitcher used to hold the wine • Foot Washing Vessels • Basin • Pitcher
Sacred Objects • Vestments • These are what the presider and other worship leaders wear. • Albs • Cinctures • Stoles • Scapular
Sacred Objects • Thurible - a.k.a The Smoking Gold Ball • This element is used to cense the altar • Sacristy • A room adjoining the worship space where sacred vessels are kept and in which clergy usually “vest”
