Child soldiers often occur in a society that has faced a major devastation and has left the population in extreme poverty. When poverty arises resources are fought for like the diamonds in Sierra Leone. After the war over half of the population was killed leaving a large portion of its citizens as children. These children had very little left to live for, which made them easy victims for the commanders to come in and kidnap them or threaten them into their ranks. These kids were abused physically and mentally. This problem is not just occurring in Sierra Leone, but has the potential to occur anywhere poverty exists.
