MedScholars Overview • MedScholars IS: • competitive fellowship (with a proposal format and deadlines) • tuition/stipend funding for research or other approved scholarly work • directly for the student (not mentor, equipment) • up to 5 full quarters • MedScholars is NOT: • automatically awarded upon submission of proposal • free money • Scholarly Concentration (and vice versa) • required part of the curriculum
MedScholars Overview • All Stanford MD students can apply • in the 1st and 2nd years there can be some % constraints • in in clerkship years there can be some % constraints • sorry…no MSTPs…
MedScholars Overview • Four RECOMMENDED draft-review deadlines per year (30-days before application due - June, September, December, March) • Four application deadlines per year (July, October, January, April) • Four “starts” per year (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer) • Completions are six months after the last quarter of funding ends
MedScholars Overview • Projects can be conducted here at Stanford – Resident MedScholars • Projects can be conducted abroad – Traveling MedScholars • Projects may be approved at other institutions within the US – Away MedScholars
MedScholars Overview • FIND your mentor/project (use CAPs, peers, SC Director advice, etc.) • DRAFT your proposal (30+ days out of deadline) • SUBMIT your proposal (by deadline) • SELECTION of projects (one month after deadline) • WORK on project as proposed • GET FUNDING! • COMPLETE project (w/in 6 mths after last quarter of funding)
MedScholars Overview Value of stipend for MedScholars effort less than 100% is prorated e.g. 75% effort is calculated as $10,457 (value of 100% effort) x .75 = $7,842 Traveling Scholars eligible for $2,500 for transportation & visas. Required medical costs covered by the MedScholars program.
MedScholars Overview • The Scholarly Concentrations and MedScholars are two, SEPARATE programs! • You can do your SC project with MS funding – or not. • You can do an MS project within your SC area – or not. • Funding can be adjusted after project acceptance, with mentor and program approval. • Proposals can be submitted ANYTIME before the deadline (24/7) • Travel Scholars encouraged to submitted AT LEAST 2 deadlines earlier than travel intended (i.e. January for Summer).

Overview of the Process • Find a mentor and project • Draft your proposal • Get SC Director’s feedback 30+ days before deadline • Complete cover sheet in MS Online & upload documents • Route to mentor • Submit for MS Review
Drafting your proposal Your proposal will include: • Cover sheet (MS Online) • Research experience • Abstract • Learning objectives • Protocols (or applications) • Mentor’s letter of support (Guidelines: http://medscholars.stanford.edu/application.html#selection )
Top Tips & Tricks • Start your draft early! • Don’t wait to submit for faculty review! • Deadline is at 6:00, not midnight • You still need to submit for MS review after your mentor approves the proposal • Don’t forget protocols and co-mentor’s letters • COMMUNICATE!
