Fresno Unified Presentation to Microsoft Education Product Group
What you already know about us • Huge bureaucracy • Influenced by textbook publishers • Regulated by legislators at the federal, state, and local levels • Our idea of innovation: • Replace chalkboards with whiteboards • Replace paper textbooks with digital textbooks • Replace overhead transparencies with Powerpoint

EmpowerNet • Network Upgrade First • EmpowerNet Center • District-wide Sharepoint Implementation • Students Digital Portfolio on My Site • 1-to-2 Initiative • Implementing Sharepoint Learning Kit • Incorporated One Note • Converted to Outlook/Exchange
Other Challenges • When I Become a Teacher • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=590PNSh6g_4 • Many teachers don’t use technology – it doesn’t seem relevant to them – or there is no time • Technology is not on the desks • Students don’t read in black and white anymore • Students read in an “F” Pattern instead of a “Z” • Students need to multi-task or they are bored (meanwhile the adults are all trying to focus)
What Microsoft Provides Us • Operating Systems • Office Productivity • Tools • More Tools • Did we mention Tools? • Hopefully Microsoft is not expecting us to figure out how to use those tools to change education • We’ll use Word to do essays, Excel to show how to add a row of numbers, and Sharepoint to post homework
The solution isn’t: • Customer-driven • Superintendent’s tend to be Risk-Averse • CTO’s are just trying to keep everything running • Top Down • Governors view education as a budget hog • Legislators view education politically • Boards view education politically • Giving us more cool tools doesn’t really help • Incremental Change is not what we need
The Battleground • The Classroom • Filled with wood/metal desks • Teacher standing/sitting in front • Students taking notes (or texting them) • Very little technology • How do you change the way a teacher teaches? • How do you change the way a student learns? • How do you differentiate the learning to match every student?
We Need a Strategy & a Product • We don’t need a new tool • Develop a strategy to transform the classroom • Synthesize 4 or 5 tools into a product for the classroom • Real-time content • Real-time assessment • Real-time feedback/intervention • Transform Education – don’t just encourage incremental change • Don’t tell anyone, just do it
