  2. African Sleeping Sickness • African Trypanosomiasis • Caused by tiny species called Trypanosomabrucei • Transmitted by tsetse fly which is only found in Africa

  3. About African Sleeping Sickness • Affects human and animals • Symptoms – headaches, joint pain, fever and itching

  4. Cycle • Tsetse fly is the host of the trypanosome • Flies taking blood turns into skin tissues • The bite enters parasites into lymphatic system • It is carried through the blood stream • Continue to replicate by binary fission • 3 weeks

  5. Cell Division Cycle • 3 major organelles:nucleus, kinetoplasts and flagellum

  6. Reproduction/How it spreads • Trypanosomes live inside flies • Transformation in the flies’ stomach • Trypanosomes swim to other flies’ digestive system during sexual reproduction • Accesses the flies’ saliva

  7. If Tsetse flies come to America • We will get African sleeping sickness and die
