Pilot Project on Web Accessibility • January 2008 – May 2008 • Objectives: • Analyze the accessibility of ITU website • Evaluate the effort involved in creating and maintaining web pages that comply with W3C accessibility guidelines (WCAG 1.0) • Focus: • Home page of ITU (6 languages) • WTISD website (6 languages)
Pilot Project : Methodology • 2 steps: • HTML code validation (chosen grammar: XHTML 1.0 Transitional) • Checkpoints of WCAG 1.0 • Tools: • WAVE accessibility validator • Manual check
Pilot Project : Outcome • Producing accessible web pages was possible but difficult • HTML editor and web publishing system did not facilitate the task • The publishing system generated specific accessibility issues in Russian, Chinese and Arabic
Pilot Project : Conclusions • Accessible website: • HTML editor/publishing system (or CMS) should facilitate the task of producing accessible web pages • Website designers/editors should receive training on web accessibility • Support from management needed at the highest possible level
Current situation in ITU • New CMS is being put in place • ITU’s focus to implement accessibility: web pages produced in the new CMS • Accessibility validation to be included in the web workflow
