The rules • Thou shalt not steal, cheat, molest or murder. • Thou shalt choose a responsible partner and keep only unto him/her for as long as you both shall live. • Thou shalt work to earn a living.
Who will teach us the rules? • 1. Parents. Most parents do a good job. • But what if parents fail? Who will teach us then?
2. The school • It can teach penal law (stealing, killing etcetera). • It can teach work ethics. • Can it teach family values?
3. Other citizens • Are they entitled to preach? • To children? • To adults? • Are we entitled to judge less fortunate citizens? • Don’t the rich get away very easily if the Dalrymple rules are what morality is all about?
4. The welfare state. • Can we keep it? Or is the welfare state educating citizens the wrong way, giving all the wrong signals to the good, the bad and the lazy? • Is the British underclass a product of the welfare state or did it exist before that?
5. The criminal justice system • Is incarceration the answer to everything? • How is it possible that convicted criminals need their psychiatrist to tell them the error of their ways?
6. The psychiatrist • Is the moral approach an evidence based therapy that really works? • Or is it simply the right way to go forward and not a therapy at all? • Extra issue. How does all of the above change in the context of a multicultural society?
