History Halloween began two thousand years ago in Ireland, England, and Northern France with the ancient religion of the Celts (Paganism). They celebrated their New Year on November 1st. This day marked the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain(sow-in), when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
Symbols The imagery of Halloween is derived from many sources, including national customs, works of Gothic and horror literature (such as the novels Frankenstein and Dracula), and classic horror films (such as Frankenstein and The Mummy). Development of artifacts and symbols associated with Halloween formed over time. For instance, the carving of jack-o'-lanterns springs from the souling custom of carving turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory.
