  1. COMPONENTS OF FITNESS Part Four Remember it can show many… All components are linked Which main component of fitness do you think these pictures show?

  2. FLEXIBILITY THE RANGE OF MOTION POSSIBLE AROUND A JOINT ROM

  3. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? ROM (Range Of Movement) is based upon our anatomy and the FUNCTION of each joint Each joint has a normal range of motion which maintains stability during movement

  4. TOO MUCH ROM in a joint can be just as harmful as TOO LITTLE ROM and result in • Joint instability • Dislocations • Injury THIS IS REALLY DANGEROUS!!

  5. Physical limits to range of motion are determined by • Our skeleton • Joint type – e.g. hinge / ball & socket • Ligaments • Tendons • Muscles

  6. Having flexibility in your muscles allows for MORE MOVEMENT AROUND JOINTS you can achieve this with a basic SAFE stretching workout guided by a GOOD teacher

  7. Stretching after your dance class when your muscles are warm and supple is a great way to increase flexibility and keep your body protected from injury

  8. Dance requires a great amount of flexibilityDancers must strive to achieve a full range of motion forALL THE MAJOR MUSCLE GROUPSThe greater the range of motion the more muscles can flex and extend

  9. EVERY JOINT NEEDS FLEXIBILITY • SHOULDERS • SPINE • HIPS • KNEES • ANKLES

  10. How to achieve it … Stretching should always be done in a 'static' manner and not bouncing (ballistic) Take your body as far as you can in the stretch and then hold it RELAX AND BREATHE into your stretches

  11. WHY DO WE NEED IT … • It is an essential element for getting positions and movements correct • It allows for freedom of movement • It adds grace & ease to your movements • It is an effective way to prevent injuries

  12. Dancers should always aim to balance their flexibility training with strength training to develop a range of motion and stability

  13. Developing flexibility in your muscles & joints can only be achieved by stretching regularly i.e. DAILY!! Like brushing your teeth…

  14. FLEXIBLE STRONGDANCERS DEFINITELY HAVE MORE FUN!!!!

  15. Do more today than you did yesterday and do more tomorrow than you did today FLEXIBILITY = RANGE OF MOVEMENT
