  1. BlingerTuesday 10/23/12 • Atticus talks to Jem about what true courage is when he discusses Mrs. Dubose. He says, "'I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety eight pounds of her. According to her, she dies beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew'" (Lee 112). • According to Atticus, what is real courage? How might this passage foreshadow what is about to happen in the second half of the novel? And finally, is the gun that Atticus refers to literal or symbolic? Explain.
