Growing problems in France • Many dislike the reforms • Austria and Prussia feared the revolution would spread • Wanted to return Louis XVI to power • War breaks out in 1792 http://astro.temple.edu/
The Revolution becomes Radical • A Radical (extreme) group (the Jacobins) begins to grow popular • August 10, 1792 • They storm the Paris palace and arrest the king

The Revolution becomes Radical • The king gets tried for treason • The verdict? GUILTY!!!!! • January 1793, the king is executed • Marie Antoinette will follow later • Europe is outraged!!!
The Reign of Terror (1793-1794) • Courts set up to prosecute “enemies of the revolution” • Over 40,000 people will die, most at the guillotine • Almost everyone is a suspect
The Reign of Terror • The Committee of Public Safety is created in 1793 to run the country • Leaders include Maximilien Robespierre • But in reality, the people of France were not safe at all…. • New motto: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité (Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood)
The Republic of Virtue • At the same time, Robespierre says the violence is only temporary • He wants to create an ideal “Republic of Virtue” • Schools, anti-slavery, good citizens • Robespierre leads a de-Christianization movement • Churches turned into “Temples of Reason” • New calendar, new names • The Republic army FINALLY starts winning • Step towards nationalism
The Fall of Robespierre… • By July 1794 people have had enough • He is arrested and executed • The Reign of Terror ends • Moderates will take control of the government
The Directory 1795-1799 • Constitution of 1795 creates a new legislative assembly • Five men are chosen from that group to rule France as the Directory • But despite this problems continue • corruption and economic woes • France is still at war with other countries • The fall of the Directory signals the end of the Revolution

Results of the French Revolution • The end of the Enlightenment • Destruction of the Estates system in France • Inspires revolutions around the world • Marks the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte
