  1. SSE - What can we Offer The Future Energy World Thames Valley Vision

  2. Overview Key discussion points; “To outline the challenges for UK in developing a secure lower carbon energy supply” “Why it’s important that the UK leads the low carbon energy world”

  3. Preparing for a Low Carbon Future • The EU has set a "20-20" target • Achieving a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions • 20% of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020 • The UK Government has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. • We agree that being environmentally friendly is not a luxury but an economic and social responsibility

  4. Meeting the Challenges of the Future Electricity demand will increase Generation sources will become more variable Maintaining security and quality of energy supply is priority An urgent need to develop "smarter grid" technologies Development of more low carbon solutions Influence how and when energy is used by end customer

  5. Smart Homes- Energy Efficiency

  6. SSE Electric Vehicle Trials • 13 Amp slow charging for compatibility with existing EV’s • 32 Amp fast charging capability increases utilisation • Universal access • Initial capital expenditure to install • Annual O&M costs BMW MINI E 2 seater 200 bhp Top speed 95 MPH (limited) Range 100 – 130 Miles Charging time 3.5 hrs @32 Amps 1ph

  7. Central & dispersed sources Central, dispersed and EV storage Asset real time ratings Substation Smart metering & communications Central & dispersed intelligence Storage Integration of new applications including EV charging and Heat Pumps End user real time information & home automation The Future - Low Carbon Networks • Recognition of looming network issues • Creation of a step change in encouragement to innovate and implement • Low Carbon Networks Fund (LCNF) proposals to encourage innovation building on past measures

  8. LCNF Objective • To allow Distribution Network Operator’s (DNO) to prepare for the role they will play • Current Scope of Project • Respond to the new network requirements that arise from the low carbon economy • Encourage low carbon solution such as demand side management • These challenges achieved by; • New technology, Commercial and network operating arrangements

  9. Thames Valley Vision – Our Project • Trailing a new planning process ‘The 3M’s; • Monitor • Model • Manage • Overall project value; • £31m • Will resolve technical issues as well as engaging with Domestic, SME & I&C customers

  10. Why Bracknell and the Thames Valley Heterogeneous range of customers providing a good representation of large parts of the UK Borough Population 100,000 + UK HQ for; GE Energy, Honeywell, BMW, John Lewis/ Waitrose, Cable & Wireless, Syngenta, Boehringer Ingelheim, and many more! Bracknell

  11. Project Partners Other Project Stakeholders

  12. Bracknell Plan, Corporate Customers

  13. Bracknell Plan, Residential Areas

  14. Project Summary Identification of the least cost scalable solution in a real environment to enable networks to support the transition to the low carbon economy; Development of commercial models to support the transition to a low carbon economy; Where existing regulatory boundaries are challenged we will work with the regulator to develop new codes of practice; Identify and develop new charging structures; Significant acceleration of low carbon technology through technology assessment and consumer and partner/ collaborator participation; Will identify areas where further study and work is required; No Customer Left Behind!

  15. Future for SSE • “to provide people with the energy they need – in a reliable and sustainable way” • Work closer with local communities, councils, RDAs, developers and customers • Develop local energy services • Provide quality energy advice and education • Community and customer involvement is key • Understanding Local Issues • Assist development of renewables market • Innovation and R&D
