  1. Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum Workshop Activity 1, 2 and 3 An Overview Objective: Use a CATC competency standard to: Develop an assessment matrix (table) and observation check list (tick sheet). Develop a draft learning plan Review Underpinning knowledge of CATC

  2. Recruit and select staff Communicate on the telephone Perform clerical Procedures Coach others in job skills Receive and store stock Promote products and services to customers Workshop Activity1& 2 Sample Competencies

  3. Compiling job descriptions Recruitment Determining training needs Developing training programs Appraisals/ skill assessments This workshop will focus on , using CATC Competency Standards in A Training and Assessment environment. CATC Competency Standards could be used for:

  4. Steps in converting competency standards to training and assessment programs Read and interpret a CATC competency standard

  5. Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum Workshop Activity 1 Objective: Use a CATC competency standard to develop an assessment matrix and a observation check list.

  6. Competency Based Assessment (CBA) Competency Based Training requires the use of Competency Based Assessment CBA seeks evidence/proof of trainee competency in relation to the endorsed Industry Competency Standardsagainst which they are being assessed This evidence may be obtained by: • Observing their work – in the workplace or in a simulated setting • Obtaining reports of their competence from supervisors, co-workers & customers • Sighting samples of work they have done

  7. Rule of Assessment? • the evidence must be: • Valid • Sufficient • Authentic • Current

  8. Observation/Check list Written Test Oral questions Simulation/role play Case study Portfolio of work Project Third party reports Video of candidate performing the task Product produced by the candidate Consult theassessment method section within the competency document Assessment Methods ( Collecting evidence that the individual can perform the action to the standard) Review these methods and determine which method is best used for each element of your competency standard.

  9. Developing an Assessment Tool • Read the copy of the sample CATC Competency Standard given to your group. • Check your understanding of the competency terms • element. • performance criteria. • Unit variables. • Assessment guide • Critical aspects of Assessment • Context of assessment. • Assessment methods • Ask for clarification of terms if not understood

  10. Record your findings in an assessment matrix.( Table)

  11. Which assessment method or combinations would you use ? Why ? How will you assess the individual ?

  12. Recording of the Assessment Evidence.

  13. Design an ‘ observation checklist’ for this competency (tick Sheet) include the following: • A heading that details what the checklist is assessing and gives the unit of competency a code and title. • Criteria to be assessed in checklist format. • Name and signature of the assessor (this is you). • Name and signature of the candidate (the person you are assessing). • Name and signature of the workplace assessment mentor. • Date of assessment.

  14. Items to be included in an observation check list • Observation Check List • Candidate Name • Unit of competency • Date of assessment • Element /Performance Criteria Comments YES NO • 1 • 1.1 • 2 • 3 • Performance was Not yet Competent Competent • Feed back to candidate • Assessor Signature Date • Candidate Signature Date

  15. Group Reporting • A group member will be required to talk about activity 1. • This should include; • Name of Competency • Description of Unit • How your group would assess this unit • Example of the assessment matrix (table) • Example of the Check list. (tick Sheet)

  16. Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum Workshop Activity 2 Objective: Use a CATC competency standard to: 1.Develop a draft learning plan. 2.Determine how much time should be allocated for the training and assessment of this unit of competency.

  17. Develop a Competency Based Training Design Model Relearning activity Individual /Pairs Activity Participant instruction: Use the list of training steps and training Phases (slide 18) to complete the ‘training design model’ (slide 19)

  18. Steps in Training Design Identify learning outcomes and Assessment Methods Assess participants Select training Methods /Prepare Material Identify Participants & Environment Internal / External Evaluation of Program Define training Requirements Select and Sequence Content Deliver Training Use the list of steps and phases in training design to compete the design model. • Phases In Training Design • Assessment • Delivery Phase • Evaluation • Planning Phase

  19. Define training Requirements Planning Phase • Identify Participants & Environment • Identify learning outcomes and Assessment Methods • Select and Sequence Content Delivery Phase • Select training Methods /Prepare Material Assessment • Deliver Training • Assess participants Evaluation • Internal / External Evaluation of Program

  20. Considerations in developing a learning plan using a CATC documents • Trainer must be competent in the competency being developed in the learning plan ?

  21. A training program is “A series of training sessions making up a training program.” Learning outcome Training Session1 Training Session 2 Learning outcome Training Program Training Session 3 Training Session 4

  22. Thinking through the steps required to turn this competency into a learning plan • Competency Requirements/what do participants have to do. The focus of the training. • How many sessions will be needed? • How much time is available? • Who are the participants? • What prior knowledge do they have? • Resources existing? or develop your own? • What must they know? And in what order? • Break up the information into small chunks. • What training methods are to be used? • How best to assess? on job/ off job? • On the job or off the job training? • Recording your plans how?

  23. Using the competency standard to help you develop a learning plan Analyses your competency standard. Develop a draft learning program plan for 2-3 elements of your competency Use the proforma.

  24. Identify the training methods to be used for each chunk List the must know content Small chunks! State how you will assess the elements 2-3 Elements How many sessions?

  25. See Evidence guide & critical aspects of assessment 1.How much time? 2.What costs? What the person has to do Determined by others! CATC Competency standards Documents What the person has to be able to do! What the person must do to prove competency How Many ? Interpreted by and developed by the trainer

  26. Element/performance criteria and assessment requirements determine CATC Competency Standards Documents What Resources exist or need to be developed What training methods are the best to use? What the person must Know Small chunks! Developed by the trainer

  27. Record your findings using a Learning Plan Proforma Title of Program Program outcome Target Participant Group

  28. Discussion Role Play Case study Project Workplace Practice and drill Simulated practice Practice tests Demonstration Lecture Video Group Learning Individual Learning Remember training methods are directed by the content ( skill and or knowledge) that the participant needs, to have to be able to perform the element) Learning Activities/Training Methods Use this list to help you Review these methods and determine which method is best used for each element of your competency standard .

  29. Group Reporting • A group member will be required to present a short talk to the workshop, • Reviewing Activity 2 • This should include; • Name of Competency • A copy of the draft training plan • Number of hours required to train and assess this competency

  30. Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum Workshop Activity 3 Objective: Review Underpinning knowledge of CATC

  31. Review Question1 • Draw a diagram (concept map) of the components of the CATC Competency Based Training System • or Develop a list of the points you remembered from today’s workshop

  32. Review Question2 • Define the term Competency Standard • A competency standard is…..
