Benefits of Reading Endorsement • Preparation to work with struggling readers • Preparation for literacy coaching • Supports developmentally-appropriate implementation of Common Core standards • Supports informed, research-based approach to RTI implementation
Program delivery • Full endorsement program delivered in 3 semesters • Courses delivered online/hybrid format or off-campus at TCESC or another area school for maximum convenience • Compressed classroom meeting time, supplemented by online activities and instruction
Program overview • 5 courses (15 semester hours) • 3 of the courses include fieldwork which can be completed in your own classroom, building, or district • Open first to licensed teachers with current full-time positions • Must pass the Praxis 0204 Teaching Reading Exam to apply for endorsement or state-mandated test
TERG 6923 Literacy & Phonics Instruction: Early Years • Delivered in distance learning format or hybrid format, Fall 2013. • P-3 teachers can apply concepts based on language arts instruction in their own classrooms. • Case study assignment highlights learning challenges of a student in your classroom or school
TERG 6924 Reading and Language Artsin the Middle and Adolescent Years • Assignments connect to the Common Core Standards • Thematic Curricular Mapping that includes content areas • Provides opportunities for collaboration with peers in class as well as school colleagues
TERG 6926 Reading and Language Arts Assessment • Response to Intervention is the framework • Understanding and identifying characteristics of dyslexia is emphasized • Various assessments from informal to formal • Assessments practiced on the children in your classroom
TERG 6927 Practicum: Coaching for Effective Literacy Instruction • Develop skills of meaningful dialog and collaboration with peers • Coach colleagues in implementing strategies and gather evidence of their impact • Collect evidence of coaching effectiveness
TERG 6928Practicum: Case Study in Reading and Language Arts • Practicum that focuses on one of your students • The whole child including the class setting and home is examined • Culminates in a comprehensive report synthesizing contextual information and assessment data
Application process • Application to the Reading Master’s program is required for participation in this cohort. • Completion of the Master’s is not required to receive the endorsement. • Completed forms, recommendations, and non-YSU transcripts should be sent directly to the department by email or snail mail, designated as “Trumbull Cohort.” • Do not apply through the online portal.
Application materials • If previously admitted as Y.S.U. graduate student, complete readmission form. • If not, complete application form and include a check to Y.S.U. for the application fee ($30) • 3 recommendations • Transcripts of non-YSU work only. • Links to the application, readmission, and recommendation forms can be found on the College website (http://web.ysu.edu/bcoe)
Tuition • $441.35 per credit hour for in-state students • $1,324.05 per 3 s.h. course • 15 s.h. (5 courses) in Reading Endorsement • $6,620.25 Estimated Cost • TaskStreamfee: $42.00 (one year account)
