Warm up • What is the methods portion of a lab report include?
Warm up answers • The steps or procedures to perform a lab.
Today’s activities • Complete metal v nonmetal lab report • Notes • Partner activity- 10 heterogenous and homogeneous mixtures
Water is a form of Matter… • Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass. Can be a : • Solid • Liquid • Gas
“Pure” Water • Because many substances readily dissolve in water, we call those aqueous solutions. Even “pure” water has dissolved minerals and gasses in it! • Pure water is clear, colorless, odorless, and tasteless
Mixtures • Mixture: when 2 or more substances combine, and yet the substances retain their individual properties (they can be separated by physical means like filtration or adsorption)
Two Types of Mixtures 1. Heterogenous 2. Homogenous A mixture that is uniform all throughout • A mixture who’s composition is NOT the same all throughout
Heterogenous Mixtures • Suspension: when solid particles are large enough to settle out through filtration • Ex: coffee grounds & water • Colloid: when small particles can not be filtered out • Ex: milk
Homogenous Mixtures • Solution: consists of a solute (the dissolved substance) and a solvent(the dissolving agent [substance doing the dissolving]) Solute: powder Solvent: water
Cool down • Give an example of a solution and an example of a mixture.
