EWB-NEU • Founded 2005 • Several successful projects completed in Honduras • Approached by Friends of the Sick and Poor (FOSP) in 2008 • NEU Assessment trip to Bbanda April/May 2009 • Planning implementation of water supply improvement project
Who am I? • Northeastern University – Class of ‘73 • Senior Principal, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger • BS and SM (MIT) in civil engineering (structures) • Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering • Expertise in structural design and performance of buried pipes, tanks, and culverts • Mentor for NEU Uganda project since June ‘09
Schools • ~2000 students • Many from other towns • Only high school in county • 5 primary schools • Prepare lunch at school
Village: Housing • Water supply • none! • Latrines • pits • piles • ???
Assessment: Water & Health • BOREHOLES • high amounts of iron • corrosive water • virtually no bacteria • OPEN WELLS • high bacteria counts • no metals • HEALTH • 2 meals/day • Malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea, HIV • >1 hour getting water
The Needs • Increased quantity and quality • Reduce fetching time • Keep children in school
Water sources • 14, 20 – springs – primary current sources • 8 – borehole – intermittent operation
Phase 1 – EWB-NEU • 2 downtown boreholes • Mechanical hand pumps • Hygiene & sanitation
EWB-NEU Phase 1 • 2nd Assessment Trip April/May 2010 • Establish Water Board • Meet with contractors • Present plan to community • Finalize borehole locations • Implementation Trip August 2010 • Drill two boreholes • Investigate existing boreholes • Hygiene & sanitation • Individual rainwater catchment
Capstone Project: Water Supply Phase 2 Objective: From existing water sources, provide multiple water distribution points around the village of Bbanda.
Capstone Project: Water Supply Phase 2 Project criteria • 25 year design life • Use water from boreholes and springs as needed • Provide storage facility with min. 48 hr water supply for all residents in village • Distribute water to sufficient village locations to provide maximum ¼ mile travel from any home • No local power available • Project must be sustainable by local population and with local resources
